Abstract

Se estudian varios casos de escritura públicamente expuestas a dobles lecturas. Las dobles lecturas cobran tanto un significado metafórico como textual en los epígrafes, pues, al leer doblemente alguna letra, el mensaje cobra otra interpretación. Además, cuando se adivina el doblete, se tiende a releer automáticamente. Estos trazos inesperados forman anagramas, trampantojos o jeroglíficos; es decir, juegos gráficos de ingenio. Para saber identificar esos enigmas en la escritura, se proponen dos pautas. Una es necesaria: que la doble interpretación cobre un sentido coherente con el epígrafe y su contexto, o con las fórmulas y símbolos coetáneos. La otra pauta es sólo orientativa. Consiste en descartar que lo anómalo sea una errata, comprobando si los trazos especiales se diseñaron de forma intencionada, y son congruentes con el resto del epígrafe. Para ello, se propone recrear la ordinatio, trazando unas líneas directrices. Todo ello se estudia analizando tres epígrafes de la Edad Moderna (siglos XV al XVIII), de tres urbes de España: Almagro, Granada y Madrid.
