Abstract

A histochemical study, Alcian Blue technique, was made on the growth plate of the tibia in streptozotocin induced diabetic male rats. Results were compared with a control group. After the first week, although diabetic growth plates were thinner than controls, no differences in staining were found; from the second week diabetic epiphyseal plates progressively showed less avidity for Alcian Blue than control plates, mainly at the resting and proliferative zones. Because of the early changes in the growth plates of the rats, doser observation of diabetic children, specially those diagnosed with delay, is advised.
