Calidad del resultado y propiedad institucional

Abstract

The work analyzes the relationship between institutional ownership and the earnings management practices of listed Spanish non-financial firms between 1997 and 2003. The results provide clear evidence of a non-linear relationship between institutional ownership and earnings management. Moreover, an examination of the influence of the institutional owner as principal shareholder (institutional ownership of control) on earnings management reveals a negative relationship, which supports the hypothesis that the presence of institutional investors mitigates the agency conflicts in firms. However, if the two principal shareholders are institutional shareholders (homogeneous ownership structure), there are higher discretionary accruals, in support of the entrenchment hypothesis. KEY WORDS: voting rights, institutional ownership, expropriation, homogeneous ownership structures.
