This essay aims to shed new light on the acoustic description of vowels as they arepronounced in the Standard Spanish spoken in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.Throughout our research, we have proceeded first to collect samples from twelvepersonal interviews in order to analyse a series of 1645 tonic, open-syllabled vowelsbelonging to words stressed on the penultimate syllable. On the basis of this analysis,we have attempted to gauge the average time-length of these vowels as well asdetermining which factors, whether of a phonetic or social nature, have an influenceupon vowel duration. Finally, the results derived from this work have been contrastedwith similar studies carried out in the Hispanic world.
