Abstract

As in the islands the areas near the coast are populated, human settlements have moved to higher places, increasing the number of houses and urbanized area that are in direct contact with forest lands, in other words, reaching the midland areas. This contact zone between human settlement and forest is called “Wildland Urban Interface”. The abandonment of agriculture tasks and farming cause the continuity of the forest and, coupled with poor management and operation of the mountains, causes the accumulation of plant fuel, generating a great vulnerability of the buildings, the animals and the persons. This interaction of man and nature, it poses danger to both because it can cause a fire on the vegetation, near the houses and assume a risk for them or, on the contrary, it can cause a fire inside an urbanized area and move to the forest. The urbanizations or developments that are in the bush or near forest lands, may be threatened by fires and it is the responsibility of the owners and the homeowners to make them more resistant and safe. The abrupt geography of the islands makes it very difficult to access for firefighting services to all homes that are build on the midland area, which will take painful decisions. This Final Degree Proyect tries to develop a manual for citizens that live in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) with the final purpose they can protect their homes, their animals and the lives of people, minimizing risks and keeping the fire away from homes until they reach the firefighting resources or minimize the consequences. This prevention is achieved by reducing combustion of structural elements housing, as well as reducing the vegetation within the pot an around homes. There is a maxim that says: “Everything can be predicted can be prevented”
