Cine estadounidense-posguerra-Frente Popular

Abstract

During World War II, American films largely echoed the spirit of collaboration between the progressive forces of the Popular Front. Many within and without Hollywood wishfully hoped for the end of the conflict to bring a cinema more committed to society, a cinema which could explore and help to expose the problems of the nation. However, not only did the late forties wipe the fears of a new economic depression away, but buried the progressive discourse in Hollywood as well. This paper aims at showing, by analysing some of the most representative social-problem films of the first postwar years, how the conservative rhetoric of those Cold War pioneers who warned of the presumed spreading of Communist propaganda in the film industry really sought to conceal any hint of liberal thinking in Hollywood. In fact, most of the titles usually referred to as subversive and un-American just longed for the correction of the most reprehensible aspects of the capitalist system, as the film industry allowed for little more from a social and political point of view.
