Abstract

The article presents the results of the research project The Transition From School to Work. The Social and Professional Insertion of Young People in the Canary Islands. It discusses the general characteristics of the transition from the educational system into the labour market, and contrasts the itineraries developed according to the variables dropout/completion of studies and sex. This allows us to understand some peculiarities of the relationship between training and employment in the Canaries, which have their origin in its productive structure, and the influence of this determining factor in individual decisions on training and labour market participation. The article focuses its attention on the itinerary of school leavers, analyzing by this the embryo of the very voluminous lower social strata in the Canary Islands.
