Cartas prisioneras.

Abstract

The development of the Francoist concentration camp system involved the captivity of about half a million prisoners. This imprecise mass of Republicans made up an endless number of caseloads which were on numerous occasions solely represented by cold and aseptic military documentation. Nevertheless, those gaps in the day-to-day life of the captives can be partially filled with private testimonies, such as the letters kept by the families of prisoners, and which contribute to a microhistorical approach to Francoist repression. Castuera Concentration Camp is one of the most significant punitive spaces of the repressive Francoist framework at the end of the war and in the post-war period. The analysis of the prisoners’ epistolary documents and of other writings emerging from the camp allows us to shed further light on their living and dying conditions.
