Costa norte : playa de Las Canteras

Abstract

This paper is a review of previously published studies on the geomorphological and sedimentological characteristics at Las Canteras beach. Regarding the formeí aspect, special focus is pointed out at la barra, a beachrock Ihat extends 200 meters offiihore parallel to the shoreline and that also crop out at different sectors of the beach face. Once the geological setting and the oceanographic conditions in the area are presented, the grain size and compositional properties of the beach sediments are described, focussing on the time-space variations. Regarding the sediment dynamics, this beach shows a very strong seasonality with opposite patterns in the northern and southern sectors of the beach, which denotes and intense longshore transport. Apart from that, the beach shows a long term tendency to accumulate sands in the northern sector, sediments that come from a submarine bank located in Confital bay.
