Escepticismo y contenido mental

Abstract

This work deals with skepticism about the external world and its knowledge. The first section attempts to show that internalism about mental content, i.e., the constitutive independence between the content of mental states and the external world, is a crucial premise in skeptical argumentation. Thus, the opposing conception of mental content, or externalism, if it were correct, could cut off a central pillar in skeptical argumentation. The second section briefly sets out the externalist position and makes three objections to it from the point of view of internalism. The following three sections are devoted to the possible responses of externalism to such objections. The final section explores other resources available to externalism, discusses the problem of demonstrative thinking, and suggests that, overall, the balance is clearly tipped on the side of the externalist position.
