Abstract

Cremation as a punishment for those sentenced to death was already used in Antiquity. In some cases, certain people are not affected by the flames because of divine intervention. It consists in a literary and folkloristic motif that can be found in the Old Testament (book of Daniel 3) and also appears in ancient Greek novel, with different nuances. Achilles Tatius and Heliodoros present towards the end of their works two ordeals in which the accused characters demonstrate their innocence, but with very different readings in one and another novel.
