Abstract

Este artículo supone un exhaustivo ejercicio de análisis de textos literarios medievales procedentes de literaturas románicas a partir de las metaforizaciones literarias que utilizan el juego del ajedrez en el Occidente medieval, con especial relación con la literatura catalana. El artículo analiza el funcionamiento, fuentes y difusión de la imagen literaria de representación social a partir del juego del ajedrez (enunciada en el Liber de Moribus Hominum de Officciis Nobilum, obra moralizada del siglo XIII escrita por el dominico Jacobo de Cessulis) y de un motivo que se deriva, el de la igualdad social ante la muerte asociado a la mezcla de las piezas cuando son en la bolsa o saco (atribuible tanto a la Moralitas de scaccario de Inocencio III como al Communiloquium de Juan de Gales, obras también del siglo XIII). El estudio previo de estas fuentes sirve de comentario a dos textos literarios de la literatura catalana que tratan, precisamente, el motivo de la bolsa del ajedrez y la metáfora de representación social, un fragmento en prosa del s. XIV de Francesc Eiximenis y unos versos del s. XV de Ausiàs March, respectivamente. Los resultados más sobresalientes del estudio son, justamente, el establecimento de la conexión de los fragmentos de dos autores de la literatura catalana dentro del contexto de las literaturas europeas que se han servido del ajedrez para establecer un entramado metafórico y alegórico, partiendo de las fuentes tardolatinas y de sus derivaciones románicas.
