Abstract

We report our experience in the treatment of fractures and its consequences with the Hoffmann II external fixator. We have operated on 34 patients. In 44% of cases there were open fractures, in 44% closed fractures, and the remaining cases were non-unions. The average follow-up was 14 months (range: 12-18). In 85% of cases, we used the external fixator as a definitive treatment, and in the remaining as a temporary treatment, until the patient or injury conditions improved and it could be applied a definitive treatment. The average union time was 21 weeks (range 6-27) and there were not cases of non-union or nerve or vessel injuries. The obtained results with this external fixator are satistactory, being its application versatile and easy, therefore we recommend its use in the treatment of fractures.
