Abstract

Behind the terms ‘subject’ and ‘subjectivity’ there is a large set of extremely difficult questions, with quite intricate relations among them. In this paper I begin by facing the question of subjectivity in as direct a way as possible, in an attempt to obtain a preliminary characterization of this notion that can introduce us into some of the tracks that start from it. The core of the paper consists in a critical presentation of the ways in which subjectivity has been dealt with in the analytic philosophy of the second half of the 20th century, focusing in particular on logical behaviorism, the identity theory and functionalism. This core is preceded by a short presentation of the highly influential Cartesian approach, and followed by a statement of the neo-Cartesian reaction and some responses to it. Finally we offer, in a tentative spirit, an alternative proposal for handling with some problems connected with subjectivity.
