Lentes esclerales y el queratocono

Abstract

Resumen Objetivo: Este trabajo tiene como objetivo revisar la literatura actual sobre el uso de lentes esclerales (LE) como tratamiento óptico para el queratocono. Métodos: Se realizó una revisión sistemática en PubMed utilizando los términos 'keratoconus' y 'scleral len*'en títulos y resúmenes. Se seleccionaron estudios en inglés publicados desde el 2019 hasta el 5 de julio de 2024. La metodología PRISMA se aplicó para estructurar la revisión y documentar de forma ordenada los motivos, procedimientos y hallazgos de la misma. Se incluyeron estudios cuyo título indicara relevancia y que evaluaran el uso de LE en pacientes con queratocono, considerando mediciones de agudeza visual, sensibilidad al contraste, aberraciones ópticas y calidad de vida. Se excluyeron aquellos que, por título o contenido, no se ajustaran a los objetivos de esta revisión. Resultados: La búsqueda inicial identificó 64 artículos. Tras aplicar los criterios de inclusión y exclusión, y revisar títulos, resúmenes y textos completos, se seleccionaron 10 artículos para la revisión final. Las características principales de los estudios revisados se presentan en tablas. Conclusiones: Esta revisión confirma que las lentes esclerales son una opción eficaz para la corrección visual en pacientes con queratocono, mejorando la agudeza visual, reduciendo aberraciones y aumentando la sensibilidad al contraste, la comodidad y la calidad de vida. Aunque el uso de LE puede verse limitado por la complejidad de la adaptación y el coste, representan una alternativa prometedora en el manejo del queratocono.
