Abstract

CPUE and mean weight data of the Spanish fleet fishing in the Atlantic have often been used by the SCRS as an indication of stock(s) trends in the BIL-94 area. The temporal analysis of the limited amount of data available (1982-1985) in 5x5-degree squares located north of 35°, where most of the catches are made, and the spatial analysis of all the Spanish fleet's fishing zones (1985) suggest that the CPUE trends toward stability should be considered with reservations. The high CPUEs found in recently opened fishing zones would compensate for the low CPUE values in the traditionally exploited area, thus giving an impression of balance far from the reality of what is actually happening in some areas. On the other hand, the substitution procedures in size data among areas prior to 1978, as a result of scanty coverage information during this period as well as spatial differences due to the Spanish fleet's geographi cal expansion to the west and south, could have greatly influenced the trend of the historie series of mean weight.
