Estudio del potencial del Estrecho de Gibraltar para el uso de dispositivos convertidores de corrientes marinas

Abstract

Las energías renovables marinas son una de las alternativas para hacer frente a la problemática energética actual. Concretamente la energía de las corrientes marinas y de marea es una de las más prometedoras debido a la gran cantidad de energía que albergan y su predictibilidad. Para el desarrollo del sector se hace indispensable localizar los lugares del planeta que reúnen las condiciones hidrodinámicas necesarias para su aprovechamiento. Se han evaluado a partir de las series temporales de velocidad del modelo UCA2.5D las condiciones del Estrecho de Gibraltar, así como la potencia disponible y extraíble mediante una turbina OpenHydro. Este modelo, desarrollado en el seno del departamento de Física Aplicada de la Universidad de Cádiz, simula los campos de velocidad con una gran resolución espacial, 1 km que se reduce a 125 metros en la parte central del Estrecho. Las grandes profundidades cerca de la costa no permiten que las corrientes del Estrecho de Gibraltar sean aprovechables en la actualidad. Sin embargo, el Umbral de Camarinal, Umbral de Espartel, costa de Tarifa, Punta Cires y la costa marroquí cerca de Alcazarseguir y el puerto de Tanger Med son las ubicaciones susceptibles para la explotación de futuros dispositivos convertidores de corrientes marinas. Para todas estas zonas encontramos velocidades máximas superiores a 3 m/, valores de potencia disponible superiores a 1.4 kW/m2 y rendimientos para una turbina OpenHydro por encima del 25%
