Gestión sostenible del estuario del río Guadiaro

Abstract

El estuario del río Guadiaro, situado en el T.M de San Roque (Cádiz), constituye un enclave de elevado valor paisajístico y natural. En su desembocadura se forma una barra de arena debido principalmente a la dinámica marina reinante en la zona. Esta dinámica tiene además la particularidad de presentar una celda de recirculación que provoca una inversión del sentido de la corriente en los metros más cercanos a la costa, lo que a su vez provoca con determinadas condiciones (principalmente con oleajes de levante) el avance de la barra hasta cerrar por completo la desembocadura. En procesos de avenidas, el caudal del río aumenta hasta provocar la rotura de la barra y la apertura de la desembocadura. La disminución del caudal del río, especialmente en las épocas de estiaje, ha provocado que la apertura natural de la desembocadura ocurra cada vez con menos frecuencia, impidiendo la renovación de agua en el estuario y provocando un descenso en la calidad del agua que en ocasiones ha llegado a producir episodios de anoxia con la consiguiente mortandad de peces. Para evitar esta situación, cuando se produce el cierre de la desembocadura se procede a su apertura de forma artificial, normalmente con medios terrestres. Históricamente se han producido numerosas actuaciones en el estuario, lográndose mejoras apreciables pero sin resolver el problema de manera definitiva. Si bien en principio se buscó una solución definitiva mediante una obra rígida, el valor ambiental de la zona hizo decantarse por una solución que aunque no fuera definitiva, resultase menos agresiva.
