Compliance by collaboration: effectively addressing problems of treatment adherence.

Abstract

Poor treatment compliance is a major problem in general practice. GPs need to develop strategies to identify and manage this problem as part of their clinical skills. This paper provides an overview of the frequency and underlying causes of poor treatment compliance, highlighting strategies that can be utilised for its enhancement and promoting an understanding of the cycle of motivational change as it may apply to treatment compliance.General practitioners should consider the use of multiple strategies to manage adherence problems. General practitioners should develop an individualised understanding of why a patient does not adhere to appropriate treatment.
