Abstract

RESUMEN: Los polihidroxialcanoatos (PHAs) son poliésteres termoplásticos completamente biosintetizados y biopolimerizados por un gran número de bacterias que los producen como mecanismo de almacenamiento de carbono y energía. A pesar de que los PHAs son completamente biodegradables y sus propiedades mecánicas son muy similares a las del polipropileno [1], su alto precio en comparación a los polímeros derivados del petróleo ha limitado su uso. En los últimos años se han explorado diversas aplicaciones de los PHAs, tanto en aplicaciones agrícolas y de biocombustibles, como en el área de envasado de alimentos. Varias investigaciones sugieren que los PHAs pueden ser también usados para la formulación de dispositivos médicos e implantes, debido a que son inmunológicamente inertes y tienen potencial aplicación en la liberación controlada de fármacos.
