Temas transculturales en el cuidado de la salud de las mujeres

Abstract

RESUMEN: Aunque en el decenio del noventa hubo una explosión de la investigación sobre la salud de las mujeres, algunos grupos femeninos reciben todavía atención limitada, específicamente, el de las mujeres emigrantes. Los datos sobre la salud de estas mujeres son insuficientes para precisar sus necesidades de salud pública y para implementar unas políticas que casi no existen. Es difícil conocer la magnitud del problema a lo largo de los Estados Unidos, porque no existe una base de datos que documente la localización y el número de tantas poblaciones de emigrantes. Los problemas que enfrentan estas poblaciones son descritos principalmente de manera anecdótica o para grupos seleccionados de los mismos emigrantes o refugiados, tales como los de Hong Kong en Minnesota o los mexicanos en California. Hasta hace muy poco, las agencias federales y del Estado mostraban falta de conocimiento e interés hacia estas poblaciones. Así, durante el último decenio se ha tenido una legislación que arbitrariamente discrimina la inmigración y a los emigrantes. Si bien el enfoque de este artículo se centra en la salud de las mujeres emigrantes, mucho de lo que se expresa en él se aplica a mujeres representantes de diversas categorías, en particular la étnica y socioeconómica.
