La corrosión de cobre en vapor de ácido propiónico en condiciones de alta humedad relativa

Abstract

RESUMEN: Los compuestos volátiles de ácidos orgánicos son contaminantes atmosféricos que contribuyen significativamente a la agresividad del ambiente. Los ácidos orgánicos más comúnmente encontrados en la atmósfera son el fórmico y el acético y en cantidades menores, los ácidos propiónico, butírico y oxálico. Los compuestos orgánicos de cobre se observan frecuentemente en las pátinas de las esculturas de bronce y en los productos de corrosión de muchas otras aplicaciones estructurales y funcionales del cobre, como techos, cables, contactos eléctricos y dispositivos electrónicos entre otros. El presente estudio muestra los resultados de la exposición de probetas de cobre en vapores de ácido propiónico en el intervalo de diez a trescientas partes por millón (ppm) a una humedad relativa cercana a la saturación. A los mayores niveles de contaminación evaluados la tasa de corrosión fue cercana a tres miligramos por decímetro cuadrado por día (mdd). Las técnicas de reducción coulométrica y barrido catódico mostraron que la cantidad de productos de corrosión aumenta con el tiempo de exposición y con el nivel de contaminante.
