Abstract

RESUMEN: La Leishmaniosis es una compleja enfermedad producida por un parásito del género Leishmania, que se manifiesta con lesiones mucocutáneas, cutáneas o viscerales. Para pensar en su tratamiento hay que tener en cuenta la interacción huésped-parásito, es decir, hay que conocer los mecanismos de defensa que utiliza el hospedero para la digestión del parásito, y la resistencia que presenta el parásito ante este ataque quimico. Los mecanismos de defensa del hospedero son activados por el sistema inmunitario que es el encargado de secretar leucinas y compuestos oxigenados capaces de destruir todo microorganismos fagocitados por los macrófagos. Ante éste ataque químico Leishmania presenta una resistencia que le facilita su multiplicación dentro del macrófago, ejercidas por enzimas antioxidantes, compuestos glicolipidos que inactivan las enzimas líticas lisosomales y un organelo, el glucosoma, donde almacena las enzimas que intervienen en el metabolismo bioenergético. Además, se debe conocer los mecanismos bioquímicos comunes al parásito y al hospedero y ubicar los blancos más seguros para la aplicación quimioterapéutica.
