CARACTERÍZACIÓN DEL SEDIMENTO DE UNA LAGUNA TROPICAL RASA

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The mechanical characteristics and the contents of organic matter, humidity, phosphorus and calcium of the sediments of the Parque Norte lake, a tropical and eutrophic shallow system, are presented. The sediment is adjusted to the organic type (half content of organic matter: 16.5%) characterized from the mechanical point of view as sandy franc and with high content of water (mean value: 84.4%). As a consequence of the high water temperatures, the values of organic matter and phosphorus found are much smaller when compared with the opposing ones in lacustrine ecosystems of temperate zone. In spite of its condition of shallow ecosystem (mean depth: 1.60 m) and its kinetic nature, ‘short circuit metabolism’ influences the speed of decomposition and the contents of organic matter and nutrients in the sediment. Sediment dynamics is slow, consequently, the resuspension’s effect is slow too, in spite of the polimictic condition of the water body.
