La influencia del orientalismo en la construcción de la alteridad cultural latinoamericana

Abstract

RESUMEN: El objetivo de esta ponencia es mostrar el proceso histórico y cultural mediante el cual las representaciones occidentales sobre culturas como la hindú, la china o la japonesa, constituyen elementos que han contribuido a construir un indigenismo latinoamericano. A partir de datos históricos, así como de una investigación etnográfica del caso colombiano, se observa, en efecto, que desde hace sólo unas décadas se comenzó a estructurar una narrativa a favor de las culturas amerindias, principalmente entre las élites intelectuales de América Latina. Aunque estas representaciones positivas –que constituyen lo que hemos llamado un indigenismo– evidentemente reivindican un saber ancestral autóctono, el análisis comparativo demuestra que los indigenistas tienen también una fuerte admiración por las culturas asiáticas, y utilizan muchos de los conceptos tradicionalmente orientalistas, para reinterpretar y valorar las culturas amerindias, lo cual ha tenido importantes consecuencias, incluso a nivel de las políticas sociales colombianas.
