Abstract

ABSTRACT: This paper describes the perceptions of three leaders of minority religious groups in the city of Medellín and its metropolitan area, referring to the emotional aspects underlying intergroup recognition relationships of their religious beliefs and practices. Specifically, the cases of Islam, Zen Buddhism and Vaishnavism were addressed. The recognition of minority religious identity represents a complex social phenomenon in which different psychological, social, cultural and even political factors that make up particular types of interreligious relations converge. Regarding the methodological design implemented, the narrative approach was used, supported in the life stories provided by the informants through interviews in the process of information collection. The results suggest that different emotional aspects underlying the process of religious conversion of the participants, significantly determined a devaluation of the need for recognition of minority religious practices and beliefs, in favor of an identity self-affirmation that does not depend on the external social estimation perceived.
