This master’s thesis investigated the effect of a soaking and subsequent drying cycle on the flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, and swelling behavior of 12 mm thick birch, eucalyptus, and poplar plywood. The tests were conducted using a universal wood testing machine, the Instron 3369, which was used to determine the flexural strength and modulus of elasticity in accordance with applicable European standards. Measurements were carried out in both longitudinal and transverse directions, with the orientation defined by the grain direction of the outer veneer layer. For each plywood material, one test series comprising 24 specimens was prepared. The specimens were soaked in water for 24 hours, followed by a 48-hour drying period. Specimens 1–12 were tested in wet conditions (moisture content approximately 32 %), while specimens 13–24 were tested in dry conditions (moisture content approximately 5.9 %). The results showed that the soaking and drying cycle had the most significant impact on the mechanical properties of the specimens. In wet conditions, the flexural strength decreased on average by 56.6 % compared to the initial values, while in dry conditions the reduction was 25 %. The modulus of elasticity decreased by an average of 54 % in wet conditions and by 13.3 % in dry conditions. In all test conditions, both the flexural strength and modulus of elasticity were higher in longitudinal specimens than in transverse ones, which corresponds to the anatomical and structural composition of plywood.
