Tartu linna koprad (Castor fiber L.)

Tartu city beavers (Castor fiber L.)
Authors: Midro, Margit;

Tartu linna koprad (Castor fiber L.)

Abstract

The impact of beaver dens on the riverbanks and the city of Tartu has previously not been researched. This Bachelor’s thesis aimed to find out what kind of beaver damage has occurred in Tartu, and tried to predict other damages that might occur in the future. Recommendations were made to prevent beaver damage. The fieldwork data in Tartu were gathered in 2016 and 2017. During the field study, the banks of the water bodies were examined, 30 kilometres in total. In the course of the study, 67 traces of beaver activity were inserted into the Nature Observation Database, which makes 2.2 traces of activities per kilometre walked. The effect of beavers building their dens and digging big holes in the riverbanks is negative. It affects the stability of the bank slopes and the winding of the riverbed. The network of beaver dens may also damage the hiking trail and break the surface under the benches. Collapsed dens prevent access for people and mechanisms, traffic on the riverbanks, and may lead to accidents, affecting directly peop
