Niiskuse mõju redise (Raphanus sativus L.) kahjurputukatele

Abstract

Climate change is a very topical subject in the present era. It is predicted to bring rise in atmospheric humidity at northern latitudes. It is important for the agricultural sector to get information how environmental factors are changing and how they affect interactions between plants and insect herbivores. The objective of this research is to study how elevated humidity level affects insect herbivores in the context of the ongoing climate change. Two experiments were carried out to study how humidity affects insect herbivores specialized on cruciferous crops: a field test, where herbivorous caterpillars’ weight changes and survival rates on radish plants (Raphanus sativus L.) in humidity manipulated plots were compared with those in control plots; and a climate room test, where the survival and weight of caterpillars feeding on radish plants grown at different moisture levels were compared. Also the herbivores’ preference of plants was observed. Both tests showed that in this humidity interval the weight and survival of cruciferous crops’ insect herbivores are not significantly affected by moisture levels. In climate room test the radish plants from high humidity treatment group, after being damaged by insect herbivores, had larger remaining leaf surface than the plants from low humidity group. Based on these results it can be predicted that increasing humidity levels alone do not affect radish plants’ and insect herbivores’ interactions significantly and therefore this climate factor does not need to be specifically included in climate models predicting future outcomes for agriculture. However, humidity may potentially affect plant-insect interactions in ineraction with other factors, such as carbon dioxide level or temperature.

Kliimamuutused on praegusel ajastul väga aktuaalseks teemaks. Siinsetel laiuskraadidel ennustatakse õhuniiskuse taseme tõusu. Põllumajandussektorile on oluline saada teavet, millises suunas ning kuidas võivad keskkonnafaktorid ajas muutuda ja millisel moel mõjutavad need põllumajanduslikke taimi ja nendest toituvaid putukherbivoore. Töö eesmärgiks on uurida, kuidas mõjutab kasvav õhuniiskuse tase ristõieliste kahjurputukaid muutuva kliima kontekstis.
