Agriculture faces unprecedented challenges from climate change and food security, where maintaining healthy soil conditions and nutrient balance plays a critical role in ensuring crop yields. Although the strong antagonism between calcium (Ca) and potassium (K) within the soil exchange complex has been described globally, traditional fertilization recommendations have struggled to explain this dynamics in Estonian soils, where latent K deficiency occurs. The objective of this Master's thesis was to evaluate the spatial variability of the exchangeable Ca/K ratio in Estonian agricultural soils, clarify its impact on crop yields, and develop recommendations for optimizing fertilization and balancing nutrients. The investigated dataset is based on soil samples from the digital database of agrochemical indicators of Estonian agricultural soils (PANDA) analyzed using the Mehlich 3 method, which were spatially profiled using a large-scale digital soil map. Statistical data from Statistics Estonia for four crops (2020–2024) were used to model regional yield relationships, and a specific field experiment with sulfur-rich oil shale ash was conducted to practically test the theoretical conclusions. The results, confirmed by analysis of variance (ANOVA), demonstrated that the Ca/K ratio is spatially uneven and directly depends on the soil group and pH. Linear regression analysis revealed a crop-specific negative relationship between a wider Ca/K ratio and crop yield, explaining 49% of the regional variance for spring wheat and 41% for oats. Concurrently, the Mehlich 3 method may overestimate the content of exchangeable Ca in alkaline soils, inducing a latent K deficiency even at K levels laboratory-rated as optimal. The conducted field experiment proved that fertilization with S-rich ash enables the leaching of excess Ca from the arable layer into lower soil horizons in the form of gypsum, thereby improving the Ca/K ratio and resulting in a 25–39% yield increase for red clover, barley, and spring wheat. The developed Ca/K ratio classes are practically applicable. This work opens up important opportunities for future research to test the described Ca/K ratios across various crops and different soil types.
Põllumajandus seisab silmitsi kliimamuutuste ja toidujulgeoleku väljakutsetega, kus saagikuse tagamisel on kriitiline roll mulla tervislikul seisundil ja toiteelementide omavahelisel tasakaalul. Kuigi Ca ja K vahelist antagonismi mulla neelamiskompleksis on globaalselt kirjeldatud, on traditsioonilised väetamissoovitused jäänud hätta selle dünaamika selgitamisel Eesti muldades, kus esineb varjatud K puudus. Magistritöö eesmärgiks oli hinnata Eesti põllumuldade Ca/K suhte ruumilist varieeruvust, selgitada selle mõju põllukultuuride saagikusele ning töötada välja soovitused väetamise optimeerimiseks ja toitainete tasakaalustamiseks. Uuritud andmestik põhineb põllumuldade agrokeemiliste näitajate digitaalse andmekogu (PANDA) Mehlich 3 meetodiga analüüsitud mullaproovidel, mida profileeriti ruumiliselt suuremõõtkavalise digitaalse mullastikukaardi abil. Maakondlike saagikuse seoste modelleerimiseks (2020– 2024) kasutati Statistikaameti andmeid nelja kultuuri kohta ning teoreetiliste järelduste praktiliseks testimiseks viidi läbi spetsiifiline põldkatse väävlirikka tolmpõlevkivituhaga. Töö tulemusel leidis dispersioonanalüüsiga (ANOVA) kinnitust, et Ca/K suhe on ruumiliselt ebaühtlane, sõltudes otseselt mullarühmast ja pH-st. Tuvastati kultuurispetsiifilise negatiivse seose Ca/K suhte laienemise ja saagikuse vahel, selgitades suvinisu maakondlikust varieeruvusest 49% ja kaera puhul 41%. Samas võib Mehlich 3 meetod ülehinnata aluselistes muldades vahetatava Ca sisaldust, mis kutsub esile varjatud K puuduse isegi laboratoorselt optimaalseks hinnatud K-taseme juures. Läbiviidud põldkatse tõestas, et S-rikka tuhaga väetamine võimaldab liigse Ca künnikihist kipsina leostumise teel alumistesse mullakihtidesse viia ja parandada Ca/K suhet, andes punase ristiku, odra ja suvinisu puhul 25–39% enamsaaki. Väljatöötatud Ca/K suhtarvude klassid on praktiliselt rakendatavad. Töö avab olulised võimalused jätku-uuringuteks, et testida kirjeldatud Ca/K suhteid erinevatel kultuuridel ja erinevate muldade puhul.
