Abstract

Tartu has been through many destructive wars but the results of the Second World War are still best observed. Much of the old town and Tartu’s symbols were destroyed during the bombings. The places that offered certain functions to citizens disappeared. Today they are replaced by overgrown shady green areas. The goal of this bachelor project was to improve the existing parts, extend the border of the old town, and to create buildings with communal value to blend the project area more into the surrounding city. As the first step, the area was analysed through old photos and maps to determine the locations of the old housing areas and to feel the spirit of the location. The moving directions, gathering points, and needs of the people are important as well. The result is an integral whole with the surrounding area, creating new connections and views, and making better use of the land, visually extending the old town.
