Maastiku mõju sookure (Grus grus) kodupiirkondade varieeruvusele

Abstract

The Eurasian crane (Grus grus) is an important species in Estonia and across Europe, with habitats increasingly threatened by human activity and land-use change. Previous research has mainly focused on migratory behaviour, while the variability of home ranges and their relationship with landscape structure has been less studied. The aim of this Bachelor’s thesis was to investigate the spatial variability of crane home ranges and to assess how landscape structure affects home range size. The study was based on GPS tracking data from 27 cranes ringed as chicks in Estonia between 2016 and 2024. Home ranges were calculated using the Autocorrelated Kernel Density Estimator (AKDE) method, distinguishing between core areas (50% UD) and total home ranges (95% UD). The overlap of land cover types with home ranges was analysed in QGIS, and statistical analyses were carried out in R. The results showed that home range size increased over time, reflecting the growing movement activity of juveniles. Wetlands played a key role in shaping core areas, agricultural land was mainly used as foraging habitat in wider ranges, and forests provided protection and resources during early developmental stages. Yard areas were generally avoided, indicating disturbance from human activity. The study confirms that landscape structure strongly influences crane spatial use, but this effect depends on both temporal context and intensity of use. The findings can be applied in species conservation and management strategies, particularly in preserving wetlands and balancing agricultural practices with habitat conservation. Future research could focus on the effects of crop rotation, seasonal land use, and human disturbance on crane spatial behaviour.

Sookurg (Grus grus) on Eestis ja Euroopas laiemalt oluline liik, kelle elupaigad on inimtegevuse ja maakasutuse muutuste tõttu pideva surve all. Varasemad uuringud on käsitlenud peamiselt liigi rändekäitumist, kuid kodupiirkondade varieeruvus ning nende seos maastikustruktuuriga on jäänud vähem uurituks. Käesoleva bakalaureusetöö eesmärk oli uurida sookurgede kodupiirkondade ruumilist varieeruvust ja hinnata, kuidas maastiku struktuur mõjutab kodupiirkonna suurust. Töö põhines 27 Eestis pesapojana märgistatud sookure GPS-jälgimisandmetel (2016–2024). Kodupiirkonnad arvutati autokorreleeritud tuumtiheduse hinnangu (AKDE) meetodil, eristades tuumala (50% UD) ja kogu kodupiirkonda (95% UD). Maastikustruktuuri ja maakattetüüpide andmete kattuvust kodupiirkondadega hinnati QGIS-is, statistiline analüüs viidi läbi R keskkonnas.
