Abstract

Introduction: Epilepsy is the most common neurological disease in children. Since these children spend a large part of their lives at school, it is necessary for it to be a safe environment where they can develop physically, mentally and socially. The presence of the school nurse in schools is essential to provide this safety through their attention and care, as well as to train teachers to act in case of medical emergencies, such as seizures. Objective: To identify the needs of children with a diagnosis of epilepsy in the school environment as well as the role of the school nurse in their attention and care. Methodology: A narrative review was conducted through the databases: PubMed, Cinahl, Web of Science, Cochrare Library and the academic search engine Google scholar. Controlled language (DeCs and MeSH) was used and combined using Boolean operators. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were established for the selection of articles. Results: 22 articles were selected, from which the results were exposed divided into: needs of children with epilepsy schooled in stable phase, needs of children with epilepsy schooled in the management of a seizure and the role of the school nurse. Conclusions: Children with a diagnosis of epilepsy need their environment to be aware of their condition and to know how to act in the event of a seizure. This requires continuous training of the school environment and this training should be provided by qualified health professionals, such as the school nurse. In turn, the school nurse should carry out educational interventions to reduce the stigma surrounding epilepsy.
