Soporte nutricional en el paciente oncológico pediátrico

Nutritional support in pediatric cancer patients
Authors: Merino Otero, Isabel;

Soporte nutricional en el paciente oncológico pediátrico

Abstract

Introduction: Childhood cancer affects 400,000 children and adolescents in the world each year, being the second cause of infant mortality. In addition, around 80% of children with advanced cancer suffer from anorexia-cachexia syndrome. The general objective is to analyze the types of nutritional support in pediatric cancer patients, including strategies to maintain oral feeding, the nutrients that should be part of their diet and the criteria that govern the choice of the type of nutritional support, as well as the knowledge of nurses about it.  Methodology: A narrative review was carried out through a bibliographic search in various databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Lilacs and Cochrane plus) and in the Google Scholar search engine.  Results: 15 articles have been analyzed in which the recommendations for maintaining oral feeding, nutritional deficiency and the criteria used for the choice of nutritional support have been investigated. Likewise, the knowledge of nurses in charge of caring for pediatric cancer patients has been deepened.  Conclusions: The lack of studies that support nutrient deficiency stands out, and, therefore, the need for supplementation. The nurses working in these units do not have the necessary training, which can lead to a lower quality of care. Therefore, the need to develop protocols that allow standardized nutritional care and a choice of nutritional therapy based on scientific evidence is evident.
