Introduction: Chronic migraine (CM) is a type of primary headache that occurs with migraine type pain, at least 15 days a month, for three months. MC has 2% of the world population and is considered the disease with the highest percentage of days with disability. Both treatment and preventive treatment are pharmacological approaches, however, prophylaxis of migraine has an index of therapeutic failure, which leads to a decrease in quality of life. Objective: to review the existing scientific literature on the effectiveness of preventive treatments for chronic migraine. Methodology: narrative review through a bibliographic search on the basis of Pubmed, Cinahl, Scopus, Cochrane, Web of Science and Dialnet plus articles published between 2014 and 2019. Results: 11 clinical trials and a systematic review were obtained. The treatments analyzed were Botox, blockade and nerve stimulation, acupuncture, antibodies, osteopathy, behavioral therapy, therapeutic education and mindfulness; which showed efficacy in decreasing days and duration of migraine, reducing pain and improving quality of life.
