Abstract

Background: cardiovascular diseases are the first cause of mortality worldwide, despite being mostly preventable. On the other hand, passive smoking has gained prominence in the past years with the scientific knowledge about its impact on the health of those exposed. Objectives: this ending career project will review the possible relationship between passive smoking and cardiovascular diseases proposing possible pathophysiological mechanisms of action. Methods: a bibliographic search has been carried out in several databases (such as Pubmed, Cuiden and Cinhal) of original scientific papers and reviews, both in Spanish and English. Results: the found results relate passive smoking with many cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in the short, medium and long term, through different mechanisms of action., such as alteration of endothelial function, platelet activation, alteration of the autonomic nervous system and tissue hypoxia. Alike, different evidence suggests that the laws approved in the past years against tobacco do actually decrease exposure to tobacco toxics to nonsmokers. Conclusion: passive smoking brings on the occurrence of CVD. Therefore, quit smoking is very important for the consequent reduction of passive smoking. Both the nursing team and the Anti-tobacco Laws have special influence on the population, the socio-sanitary level and reducing passive smoking rates
