Lactancia materna en situaciones especiales: relactación y lactancia inducida

Abstract

Introduction: All mothers have the right of breastfeeding, like all children have the right to be breastfed, but there are circumstances in which this task can be complicated in a special way. There is a possibility of producing milk again, having it recently produced or in the past, or set it without being pregnant; these experiences that are known as "relactation" and "induced lactation". Objective: To increase the knowledge about relactation and induced lactation, to study the cases which have been testetd out and what have been the determining factors that have been achieved. Subjects and Methods: The narrative review was conducted in the databases of Health Sciences: PubMed, Cinahl, Cuiden, Web of Science, Scopus, Dialnet, Medes y Enfispo. There were 19 articles published between 2006 and 2016 in English and Portuguese language which were selected, all related to the process of relactation or induced lactation. Results: After analysis of the selected articles we found that relactation processes and induced lactation can be performed successfully in most cases. The decisive factors were health professional dedication and motivation, support of family and loved ones (especially from the couple), a good performance of non-pharmacological methods, the use of breastfeeding supplementers and prescription pharmacological treatment. Conclusion: Relactation requires support and encouragement, and sometimes a good job in prevention efforts, education and support of breastfeeding will avoid considering this option. Because of sociological changes and the emergence of new family structures, breastfeeding in situations of adoption, single and homosexual parent families has to be promoted to offer our patients treatments equally. It is essential good advices and encouragement to all those mothers who start the process of relactation or induced lactation.
