Abstract

Aims: To analyze the effectiveness in the pain relief during the labour by using acupuncture. Material and methods: A narrative review was done through literature searching in databases and repositories Pubmed , Cochrane Library, Encuentra, Bucea , Joanne Briggs , Scielo , Cuiden and Cinahl, in terms of free and controlled speech and using Boolean operators (AND and NOT). The research was limited between 2006 - 2016 and languages used were Spanish, English, French and Portuguese. Results: 22 documents were chosen and revised according to the following analysis units: use of acupuncture as a non-pharmacological method in pain relief during labour, use of acupuncture with pharmacological methods to control pain in childbirth process, effectiveness of acupuncture compared with other complementary therapies in labour´s pain management and other acupuncture´s benefits in birth process. Conclusions: There is no unanimity in various studies about the effectiveness of acupuncture as an exclusive method for analgesia during the labour. New acupuncture´s researches in this field are required. However, acupuncture seems to have a lot of benefits for women in pain relief management, when it is used with other pharmacological or non-pharmacological methods, as in other physical and psychological symptoms. It would be important to promote their knowledge offering it as an option on the nursing degree and nursing postgraduate studies as a resource for achieving excellence in care.
