Abstract

El presente documento expone los fundamentos de un modelo de riesgo del tipo de cambio desarrollado por un grupo de investigadores de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, con el fin de estimar la probabilidad de riesgo cambiario en los países del área latinoamericana. La muestra con la que se ha trabajado abarca el periodo que comprende la década de los noventa, años en los que el importante aumento de los movimientos de capitales entre países provoca mayores episodios de inestabilidad financiera. A periodo histórico el modelo ha sido capaz de predecir el 80% de las crisis y periodos de calma que configuran los datos muestrales, lo que le hace válido para su utilización con fines predictivos. En la actualidad el modelo se viene aplicando mensualmente, y de forma ininterrumpida, para la estimación del riesgo del tipo de cambio para la economía latinoamericana. En su corta vida de existencia, el modelo de “Riesgo” ha demostrado su eficacia habiendo anticipado la devaluación de Ecuador en Octubre y Noviembre de 1999 y avisado de problemas en Argentina y Brasil. El informe se divide en cinco partes: el primer apartado recoge un recorrido histórico sobre la evolución de los sistemas de tipo de cambio, el segundo y tercero desarrollan, respectivamente, los fundamentos teóricos de los modelos de primera y segunda generación, el cuarto apartado recoge un resumen de los últimos trabajos empíricos realizados sobre este tema, y por último, se plantea el modelo desarrollado y sus resultados
