La Casa Barata dos Santos como experimento, por Nuno Portas y Nuno Teotónio (1958-1962)

Abstract

Between 1958 and 1962 the architects Nuno Portas (1934) and Nuno Teotónio (1922-2016) projected and directed the construction of a single family house, which was characterised by its integration into the landscape and the dialogue with the tradition of Alentejo's village Vila Viçosa, on a sloping plot neighbor high castle walls. The known as The Casa Barata dos Santos (Dr. Francisco Barata dos Santos being its promoter) proposes ways of living derived from the tardy Modern Movement, experimenting with highly fragmented spatial structures that are raised on geometry mesh which refer to Frank Lloyd Wright and they also determine the position as well as the inusual figura of each hole and each window. The Casa Barata was first published on July 1963 in Journal Architecture, thus beginning to influence the Portuguese residential architecture at a subsequent stage. It has been clasified as the SIPA in its catalogue with the number IPA.00024921.
