Minerales y medioambiente

Abstract

This workshop is focused on minerals and the environment. It includes several practical activities: a video viewing for a general presentation of the theme (activity 1), tracing of mineral deposits using Google Earth (activity 2), identifying some metal-bearing minerals based on their properties (activity 3), looking for the relationship between everyday objects and minerals (activity 4), working on acid mine drainage, one of the environmental problems generated by the extraction mineral in some types of mineral deposits, by means of an experimental design (activity 5). The material required is very simple and only activity 5 needs a more complex, but affordable, laboratory setup. The approach of the workshop is interdisciplinary. Thus in addition to addressing a geological topic (and an environmental topic, which is transversal itself), it deals with chemistry concepts and procedures.
