Analysing Spanish income and expenditure through Empirical Likelihood. Using Spanish Household Panel Survey for the third quarter of 1997 and using Empirical Likelihood approach we observe Spanish families have only a 2,4% of excess income over current expenditure, limiting their saving capability and forcing borrowing behaviour. On the other hand, a 95% of households have a greater expenditure than income according to fiscal records, revealing under-declaration in the income tax. Empirical Likelihood turns to be useful methodology in Economics, specially in income studies, as it has proven to be in many other related fields. This method provides useful results related to variables considered and a practical way to reveal hiding behaviour from available data.
