Abstract

Residential mobility is one of the key factors to study the evolution of the cities. As the metropolitan processes keep expanding, the residential flows have intensified and diversified, altering different facets of the urban development and reconfiguration. The actors follow diverse trajectories, and the effects of those changes also vary in space. Thereafter, and taking into account the current context of economic crisis, the study of residential mobility processes (and their leading agents) can provide valuable information to plan strategies of urban sustainability and zoning in the long term. This research focuses in the main trends and evolution of residential mobility in the metropolitan area of Granada. Through a quantitative approach we will combine data from different sources: the censuses of population and housing, a 2008 survey on housing by the Instituto de Desarrollo Regional (UGR), and a few studies on mobility published in prior decades. For the whole metropolitan area the results evidence some well known processes, like the suburbanisation, but also new flows between towns of the metropolitan ring, or inside the municipalities. Those trends have consequences on the cohesion of the sociospatial structure of the city, and therefore should be considered as a crucial factor to plan new interventions on urban development and urban sustainability.
