Abstract

Material and Methods: The sample is represented by the alternate issues from volume 39 (1996), including the last issue. In order to update the data, it has been used the last two issues from volume 41 (1998). The editorial and normative analysis checks 196 parameters, estructured in a Evaluation Form, and extracted from ISO standards, from organisms and researches related to scientific editing and in the international specialized standards. Results: The overal mean value for compliance with standards was 53% and the actual mean was 83%. This actual mean is taken on those sections in the journal considered fundamental in the present mecanisms of scientific information dissemination. The normative study description reflects a good normalization level, though improvement recomendations are given. The editorial process analysis reflects a behaviour comparable to international standards in medicine, though some recomendations to optimize the quality and editorial clearness are given. Conclusions: Progresos de Obstetricia y Ginecología is a quality journal as a communication and diffusion mean of research results and with an acceptable internal mechanism in it editorial process. In comparation with some others Spanish medicine journals enlighten the position of POG among the bests in its speciality and much more overhead other journals from different knowledge areas or institutional fields.
