Abstract

Objective: To evaluate editorial quality, diffusion, relevance of the scientific content, and publication practices in the scientific journal Revista Española de Enfermedades Digestivas. Material and methods: We checked 136 parameters based on ISO standards, recommendations of scientific and editorial organizations, studies of scientific editing, and international practices in the specialty the journal is devoted to. Diffusion was investigated in national and international databases, specialized libraries in Spain, and Internet sources. The analysis of the scientific content and publication practices was based on bibliometric indicators for the journal, authorship, and contributions. The sample for this study comprised alternate issues of a volume 88 (1996), the most recent issue of volume 88, and the first issue of the following volume 89 (1997). The material used for the bibliometric analysis varied depending on the characteristics of specific indicators and the availability of information. Results: The overall mean value for compliance with standards was 46.1%; the actual mean was 72.21%. The editorial process at the journal is similar to that of other international journals devoted to medicine. The journal is included in international data bases of biomedical journals, and in the interdisciplinary international database SCI. Its presence in medical faculty libraries is 70% and in hospital libraries 73%. Bibliometric indicators: Co-authorship was 5.5%. Origin of authors by autonomous region and type of hospital: 27.8% of all authors were from Madrid, and more authors were affiliated with general hospitals than with university hospitals. The mean time from acceptance of a manuscript to publication was 300 days. Cocitation analysis showed that the journal occupies a central position in the group of 38 journals considered representative of Spanish biomedical research. The impact factor was calculated as 0.260 for articles published in 1996. Conclusions: Revista Española de Enfermedades Digestivas is a high-quality journal as a means of disseminating research results and with acceptable internal editorial procedures. The journal is widely distributed, although its visibility on the Internet should be improved. Co-authorship was similar to that in other medical journals. It should take steps to become better known within Spain, and to reduce the time from manuscript acceptance to publication. Its impact factor is increasing steadily.
