Cambio global y vulnerabilidad humana a enfermedades y plagas: desafíos científicos, éticos y sociales

Abstract

The documentation for this session of the series "Global change, extinctions and future prospects" includes three sections: a) An introductory one, where elements of broad scientific consensus regarding global change are presented, and also the complex interrelation of variables in the Earth system, along with difficulties to carry out a global-risk assessment (specially, for potential complex emergencies). b) A section specifically devoted to analyze risks to human and animal health due to environmental changes that may alter reproductive cycles of disease vectors, including trend projections from a baseline scenario, in order to identify the most vulnerable populations to emerging and reemerging diseases, in a broader context of overall vulnerability to climate-related extreme events. c) Finally some key-elements for social and political debate are presented, highlighting the difficulties in getting the public to understand complex processes undergoing slow development, along with many scientific and technical component usually ignored in political decisions regarding mitigation and adaptation to global change, given the fragility and inadequacy of the international framework where those decisions are made. Some of these elements are useful to understand the notion of climate justice.
