Several variables seem to affect the evolution of couple relationships. In this study we centres our attention on the importance of the expectations that each spouse had generated about their relationship. To be exact, our goal was to identify any possible association between the congruence revealed by the participant, understanding this as an adjustment between what he expected of his relationship and reality, and marital satisfaction. Our results indicate that negative congruence (great differences between what one expected and the real situation)adjusted congruence and positive congruence (reality lived with one's partner exceeds previous expectations), all determine marital satisfaction rates. No relation was found between variables such as gender or chronological age and the type of congruence shown by the participan; although, the period of time spent living togeher proved to be important in this aspect, this means that experience determines the type of congruence.

Son múltiples las variables que parecen afectar el desarrollo de una relación de pareja. En el presente trabajo nos centramos en la importancia de las expectativas que cada uno de los cónyuges elabora sobre su relación. Concretamente, nuestro objetivo fue analizar si el tipo de congruencia manifestada por el sujeto, entendida esta como el ajuste entre lo que esperaban de la relación y la realidad condicionaba el nivel de satisfacción marital. Los resultados obtenidos indican que efectivamente el tipo de congruencia negativa (desajuste entre lo que esperaban y lo que obtienen), ajustada o positiva (realidad vivida con la pareja que supera sus expectativas) condiciona el grado de satisfacción marital. A su vez, variables como el género o la edad cronológica no se relacionan con el tipo de congruencia que manifieste el sujeto, mientras que sí es importante en este sentido el tiempo de convivencia en pareja, es decir la experiencia incide en el tipo de expectativas
