Criptomoedas e redes sociais

Abstract

Social networks are having a great disruptive capacity in many human activities, creating environments in which a large part of people's life experiences take place. One of these irruptions are the cryptocurrencies circulating in cyberspace, which have been inspired both by a libertarian conception of money and by the Robinsonian effect of networks which, in a country like El Salvador, have acquired the status of legal tender (as in the case of bitcoin). The most ambitious marriage between networks and cryptocurrencies is currently the libra project for the metaverse, which proposes a new sovereign space in private hands, taking advantage of the characteristics of cyberspace. This paper analyses this project, discovering its true nature (money or mere financial asset?), the systemic risks it represents, and the reaction of the financial regulatory authorities of the most important powers.
