Abstract

Estos cuatro paisajes de base física: sierras, altiplanos, llanuras semiáridas con vegas y “semidesiertos”, constituyen lo esencial del área y definen los aspectos más sobresalientes de la actividad humana. he Baza region occupies the entire basin of the Guadiana Menor, except for the section corresponding to its tributary, the Guadahortuna river, which flows into the area of Los Montes, in the north of the province of Granada. It is framed by the Baza and Guadix basins, formations that belong to the great intrabetic furrow. These plateaus -between 800 and 1200 m of altitude- are delimited by a belt of mountain ranges that isolate them from the outside: Sierra Arana to the southeast; Cazorla, Segura and La Sagra to the southwest and those of María, Topares and Jara to the east, without forgetting that the northern slope of Sierra Nevada is the great screen that marks the south and southeast of the region. On the other hand, the Sierra de Baza is a vast mountainous wall with an altitude of more than 2000 m. It has also formed another vast area of bad lands (bad-lands) that shapes a desert similar to those existing in Almeria, but more extensive and discontinuous in the environment of an infinite range of ravines and gullies. These four physical landscapes: sierras, high plateaus, semi-arid plains with meadows and “semi-deserts”, make up the essence of the area and define the most outstanding aspects of human activity.
