La Protesta Campesina como Protesta Ambiental Siglos XVIII-XX

Abstract

The present text is an attempt to delve deeper into this type of conflict, both from a theoretical point of view and at the same time investigating its practical dimension by applying the conceptual scheme developed below to the case of the peasantry. Our intention is to unveil the logic underlying this type of conflict, to explain its causes, its deepest roots, rejecting any simplification based on class affiliation, economic deterioration or poverty, or simply on the effects of environmental damage. First, we will develop a minimal theory on environmental conflicts in historical perspective, which will lead us to some conceptual precisions. Secondly, we will analyze the importance of environmental conflicts in social dynamics, emphasizing their impact on the relationship between man and nature. The cases that will be collected refer to the peasantry. The third part is dedicated to characterizing the forms of peasant production and their specific relationship with nature, and ends with a minimum typology that allows us to classify, and therefore interpret, the environmental conflicts that peasants have been involved in and their changing face throughout the last two centuries.
